Dear Bay Leaf Kitchen Community,
Thank you so much for all of your support, ideas, recipes and friendships over the years. When we opened our doors in 2014, we never could have foreseen all of the incredible connections we would make, all of the amazing supporters we would meet, or all of the oppurtunities we would have to cook, eat, play and learn with all of you.
It is with great pleasure that we update you on a new chapter of collaboration. We are joining forces with The Cooking Project, a wonderful nonprofit based in San Francisco dedicated to helping young people feed themselves. The team at the Cooking Project is excited to meet and work with you all.
We know that we would not have been able to make the impact we made without YOUR support of Bay Leaf Kitchen and, as we move into this next chapter, we hope that you know how grateful we are for all that you have done to help make Bay Leaf Kitchen a truly impactful organization in the San Francisco Bay Area. My name is Sasha Bernstein Skon, and I’m the director of the Cooking Project, a Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to helping young people better feed themselves. This spring, when my friend and colleague Elianna Friedman approached me and my cofounder Chef Daniel Patterson about joining our two kindred spirit organizations — the answer was an easy yes. The actual process has been more nuanced, and that’s where you come in!
When Elianna and I launched CUESA’s Foodwise Kids together in 2012, and then each of our respective organizations in 2013, we saw a need for youth food education and knew that kids love cooking — we believe that those knowns hold true. What we’d like to hear from you is how we can best serve our combined communities’ needs as we look ahead; what do your families and kids look forward to most in food programs?
As introduction, the Cooking Project runs in a series style format called the Food Studies Program, and I invite you to explore some of our past classes and recipes on our website. As Bay Leaf Kitchen has traditionally held camps and classes throughout the year, which Rachel Kiichli masterfully directed, we’d like explore offering some continuation of those experiences, too. We look forward to hearing your ideas and wishes as we build them.
